There are actually 2 types of forklifts, based whether or not they run on gas or electricity:
Internal Combustion or IC Lift trucks: The IC forklift will run on fuels such as gas, liquid propane, diesel or compressed natural gas or CNG. Gas powered units are great for outdoor use because they release gases and pollutants which are harmful to employees and pedestrians. Gas models are also great to be used in bad weather and in the rain. These models can lift weights around 15,000 to 35,000 pounds. Because of the maintenance and fuel costs, the gas powered units are more expensive to use than units that run on electricity, although, they cost less up front than the electric models. Models that run on liquid propane are the right option for safe use inside.
Electric Forklifts: Electric forklifts take batteries which require frequent charging. Because these units do not burn any fuel, there are no emissions polluting the air with these vehicles. They are the best choice for indoor applications and warehouses. As well, forklifts that run on electricity are a lot quieter to run compared to other models and they do not need any fuel storage units. Amongst the disadvantages of the electric models is that they are unable to lift cargo more than 15,000 pounds and therefore, have a slower acceleration than gasoline powered units.
The forklift is particularly made to transport goods and materials easily and quickly. Mishaps do occur often as is the case with most types of vehicles. There are specific safety rules which must be followed to be able to keep everyone safe. The most vital problem is recruiting a qualified operator, who could show you a valid lift truck license.
On the market nowadays, there are many different types of lift trucks available. Choosing which one is best for your particular needs will be based on the kinds of loads which you have to transport, what kind of environment your equipment would have to operate in, for example, indoors or outdoors or both. Once you know your specific needs, it would be really easy to match up to the right kind of forklift. When you know all your requirements precisely you would be able to make an accurate choice.
Leasing is one more great way to check out different models if you want to try out different features and see what kind of choices are available. This is a cheaper way to determine if the machinery you have in mind can keep up with you on the job site.
