Forklift Battery Safety
The large industrial sized batteries utilized to power electric lift trucks should be charged regularly and correctly maintained. Safety procedures should always be followed while connecting the battery to the charger. It is very essential to inspect fluid levels in the battery.
Personal Protective Equipment - PPE
It is important for workers working with a forklift battery to wear eye protection. Other PPG consist of safety glasses, goggles, or a full face shield. The right way to protect clothes and skin from leaked acid or other residue is to put on thick rubber gloves on the hands and an approved apron on the body.
Emergency Eyewash Station
An emergency eyewash station must be located close to the charging area. The path to the post should not be obstructed and an employee who is injured must be able to reach the eyewash station from the charging place in 10 seconds while walking.
Charger Safety
The charger should be the same amperage as the battery. It should be turned off while the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
Open fire are not allowed in the vicinity of a battery and charging area. Never allow items like lighters or matches to be used when someone is inspecting the battery fluid levels.
Ventilation
The battery charging place also needs to be well ventilated. The recharging method could release gas. These gases are both poisonous and explosive.
