A stock picker, also referred to as an order picker is a machinery which is quite similar to a forklift. It allows the driver to use forks to raise a pallet. An order picker is also capable of lifting the operator up to higher shelves for picking certain items, and this feature is something the forklift does not offer. Typically, order pickers are operated by electricity. These machinery are mainly utilized in a warehouse environment. Most often they are used for transporting pallets and completing particular jobs in the stocking and shelving department.
The order picker operator uses controls to control the unit from a platform setting which usually sits fairly near the ground. The operator is able to direct the equipment to go forward, backward or steer it from side to side. As soon as the operator has positioned the unit in place the blades can be lifted up to the required level that makes it very convenient for the operator. Like for instance, if the needed materials, are located on a shelf that the operator cannot reach, then entire platform could be raised up to certain level. Due to the counterweight located at the other end, the unit remains balanced, even at higher levels.
The platform is lowered back to its original position after the order has been picked. The order picker is then driven or directed to its next location. With most models, it is possible to move the order picker whilst the platform is raised, although, several companies may have policies and procedures in place preventing such maneuvers for safety reasons. An order picker is also able to place pallets on a shelf. Stackers and forklifts can be utilized to complete these particular jobs at several companies instead.
